Abstract

Generation Z has grown up in a digital era characterized by intensive social media use, which has significantly influenced interpersonal communication patterns and increased vulnerability to toxic romantic relationships. Toxic relationships are marked by inequality, emotional manipulation, excessive control, and ineffective communication, leading to serious psychological consequences for young individuals. This study aims to describe and analyze the role of counselors in addressing toxic relationships among Generation Z through a holistic approach grounded in Carl Rogers’ Person-Centered Therapy. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, drawing on secondary data from academic journals, psychology textbooks, conference proceedings, and relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025. Data were analyzed using content analysis to examine theoretical concepts, empirical findings, and counseling practices related to toxic relationships and humanistic therapy. The findings indicate that the integration of Rogers’ core conditions unconditional positive regard, empathic understanding, and congruence within a holistic framework effectively fosters a safe and supportive therapeutic environment for Generation Z clients. Counselors play a crucial role in restoring self-concept, establishing healthy relational boundaries, and facilitating clients’ self-actualization. Therefore, the holistic Person-Centered approach is highly relevant and effective in supporting psychological recovery and sustainable personal growth among Generation Z experiencing toxic relationships.
